What decibel numbers actually mean

Sound is measured in decibels, usually A-weighted as dB(A) to reflect how human hearing responds to different frequencies. The scale is logarithmic, so the arithmetic is not intuitive.

  • A 3 dB change doubles the sound energy but is only just perceptible.
  • A 10 dB change is perceived as roughly twice, or half, as loud.

A single-stage compressor has one speed: full. Every time the thermostat calls, the unit starts at maximum, runs loudly until the setpoint is met, then stops, and the start and stop are the moments people notice. A variable-speed inverter ramps up gradually and then settles at whatever fraction of capacity the house actually needs, often 30 to 60 percent. Both the compressor and the fan are far quieter there than at full speed.

That is why the gap between a 70 dB(A) single-stage unit and a 55 dB(A) inverter understates the real difference in how they are experienced. The inverter is quieter at its worst and dramatically quieter at its typical operating point, and it has no abrupt starts. If quiet is your priority and you take only one thing from this guide, it is to buy variable-speed, whatever the badge.

Ask your contractor for the sound data page in the product literature for your exact model and size, not the marketing figure. Manufacturers usually publish sound at both minimum and maximum compressor speed, and the maximum is what you will hear on the hottest and coldest days.

Placement, mounting and sound blankets

Installation decisions routinely swing the result by more than the difference between any two models here.

  • Distance and direction. Put the outdoor unit on a wall without bedroom windows and as far from the property line as clearances allow. On top-discharge cabinets, keep the fan clear overhead; on side-discharge units, aim the discharge along the yard, not at a fence or a neighbor’s window.
