A modern variable-speed heat pump’s outdoor unit is rated between roughly 50 and 60 decibels, about the level of a quiet conversation or light rain, while older single-stage units run 70 decibels or more, closer to a vacuum cleaner. Ductless indoor heads can be as quiet as 19 to 25 decibels on low, quieter than a whisper. Where the outdoor unit sits, what it sits on, and how it is sized matter as much as the number on the spec sheet, and many towns set nighttime limits of 45 to 55 decibels at the property line that you need to know before choosing a location.

Understanding the decibel scale

Sound levels are measured in decibels (dB), usually A-weighted (dB(A)) to reflect how the human ear hears different frequencies. The scale is logarithmic, which is why small differences in the number mean large differences in loudness: every 10 dB increase is perceived as roughly twice as loud, and every 3 dB represents a doubling of sound energy even though it is only just noticeable. A 55 dB unit is not 20% quieter than a 70 dB unit; it sounds less than half as loud.

The gap between a variable-speed and a single-stage unit is the most important line in the table. Indoor noise: heads, air handlers, and ducts

Ductless indoor heads are the quietest heating and cooling equipment you can put in a room; at low fan speed most are rated below 25 dB(A), which is inaudible over normal household sounds. What owners notice instead are occasional clicks and creaks from plastic panels expanding, the louver motor, and a soft gurgle from refrigerant, all normal. Ducted systems make noise at the air handler and transmit it through the ducts. A variable-speed blower ramping gently is quiet; a single-speed blower starting at full airflow is not. Undersized returns and high static pressure produce a whooshing at grilles, and metal ducts can carry compressor vibration into the house. Placement: the decision that matters most

  • Distance from bedrooms and neighbors. Every doubling of distance cuts perceived noise substantially. Favor a side of the house without bedroom windows, and keep the unit as far from the property line as clearances and line-set length allow.
  • Avoid corners and alcoves. Two walls meeting behind a unit reflect sound back and can add 3 to 6 dB. An open wall with clearance on both sides is quieter.
  • Mounting. Ground units belong on a composite pad with rubber isolation feet; wall brackets need rubber isolators and should not be attached to a bedroom wall or a lightweight framed wall that can act as a sounding board. In snow country, a stand raises the unit above snow and away from reflective surfaces.
  • Orientation. Fan discharge is the loudest direction on top-discharge units; side-discharge models (common in compact and ductless outdoor units) should point away from the neighbor’s window.
  • Line-set path. Refrigerant lines clamped tightly to framing can carry vibration indoors; a short flexible loop and padded clamps break the path.

Sound blankets, fences, and other fixes

A compressor sound blanket is a fitted acoustic jacket that wraps the compressor inside the outdoor unit. It reduces the compressor’s tonal hum by a few decibels but does nothing for fan noise, which dominates on most modern units. Most premium variable-speed models already ship with one. Acoustic fences or enclosures can cut 5 to 10 dB when they fully break the line of sight between the unit and the listener, but they must leave the manufacturer’s clearances open on all sides and above, or the unit will recirculate its own air and lose efficiency. Solid fences a few feet away that leave the top open are the usual compromise. Anti-vibration pads under the unit’s feet are inexpensive and worthwhile on any hard surface.

Never build an enclosure that blocks airflow to the coil or the fan discharge. Reduced airflow raises head pressure, cuts capacity, and shortens compressor life, and it can void the warranty. Winter sounds that are normal

Heat pumps make sounds in winter that air conditioners never do. A defrost cycle begins with a whoosh as the reversing valve shifts, the fan stops, and the unit steams for a few minutes; some models also emit a brief hiss or a metallic clunk at the start and end. Ice cracking off the coil and dripping is normal. Local ordinances, setbacks, and HOAs

Many municipalities set a maximum sound level at the property line, commonly 45 to 55 dB(A) at night and 5 to 10 dB higher during the day. Some cities are stricter; Seattle, for example, limits residential nighttime noise at the property line to 45 dB(A). Zoning codes also set minimum setbacks for mechanical equipment, often 3 to 5 feet from a side property line, and some prohibit equipment in front yards. Homeowners’ associations may add their own rules on placement and screening.

Before the installer sets the unit, check three things: your city’s noise ordinance (usually on the municipal code website under “noise”), the zoning setback for mechanical equipment, and any HOA covenants. If a 70 dB unit needs to sit 6 feet from the property line to meet a 45 dB limit it will fail; a 55 dB variable-speed unit at the same distance, on isolation pads and away from a corner, will usually pass.
