Lennox's SL25XPV is the quietest full-size ducted heat pump in its class and one of the most efficient, especially on heating. The 10-year warranty and Lennox parts logistics are the weak spots.

The Lennox SL25XPV is the top heat pump in the Dave Lennox Signature Collection and the successor to the long-running XP25. Lennox rates it at up to 24.0 SEER and 11.8 HSPF under the older test procedure, which translates to roughly 21.8 to 23.2 SEER2 and up to about 11.2 HSPF2 depending on tonnage. Published sound is 58 dB(A), among the quietest full-size ducted units sold. It is also one of the most expensive heat pumps a homeowner can buy.

Overview

The SL25XPV is a variable-capacity inverter heat pump built around Lennox’s Quantum Coil — an all-aluminum outdoor coil that eliminates the copper-to-aluminum joints where corrosion leaks typically start. The compressor modulates continuously rather than stepping, and the system is designed to run at the lowest output that satisfies the load, often for hours at a time.

Lennox sells three tiers, and knowing which one you are being quoted matters more than any single spec.

The Elite tier is where most Lennox buyers should start looking. It captures the inverter comfort benefit at a substantially lower price, and the efficiency gap costs less in practice than the price gap does.

Efficiency

Rated efficiency varies noticeably by size on this model, more than on most competitors, so the marketing number and the number on your quote may differ. Distributor listings for the current generation show:

  • 2 ton (SL25XPV-024): up to about 23.2 SEER2, up to about 9.7 HSPF2
  • 3 ton (SL25XPV-036): up to about 22.2 SEER2, up to about 11.2 HSPF2
  • 4 ton (SL25XPV-048): up to about 21.8 SEER2, up to about 9.8 HSPF2

Lennox’s headline “up to 24 SEER” and “up to 11.8 HSPF” figures are from the older SEER/HSPF test procedure and should not be compared directly against a competitor’s SEER2 number. Under the current procedure the SL25XPV is squarely in the top tier of ducted heat pumps, alongside Carrier’s Infinity and slightly ahead of Trane’s XV20i.

The 3-ton size’s HSPF2 of about 11.2 stands out. That is exceptional for a ducted central system and materially better than most rivals, which cluster between 9 and 10.5. If heating dominates your bills and a 3-ton unit fits your load, that single number is the strongest argument for this system. Heating performance

Variable-capacity modulation gives the SL25XPV a good heating curve for a conventional ducted system. It ramps toward full output as outdoor temperature falls, keeping ahead of the load further into the cold than a two-stage unit and pushing back the point where electric strips engage.

Lennox has also invested seriously in cold-climate development, introducing a dedicated cold climate heat pump aimed at high-latitude markets. The SL25XPV itself is a strong all-round heater rather than a specialist: expect efficient operation through the 20s°F and declining capacity below that.

In climate zone 5 and colder, plan on either a properly sized auxiliary heat package or a dual-fuel pairing with a Lennox gas furnace. Cooling performance

This is the SL25XPV’s showcase. Continuous low-speed operation holds indoor temperature within a fraction of a degree and dehumidifies for long uninterrupted stretches. Combined with Lennox’s precise airflow control on the indoor side, the result is the flat, dry, quiet cooling that people describe as not noticing the system at all.

Lennox also integrates the system with its PureAir indoor air quality equipment, which handles filtration, ozone reduction and odor control through the same ductwork. That integration is genuinely convenient for allergy-sensitive households, though it is an added cost.

Noise

Lennox publishes a sound rating of 58 dB(A) for the SL25XPV, and the brand has built much of its premium marketing around quiet operation. In practice that figure is achieved through a variable-speed outdoor fan, an insulated compressor compartment and cabinet damping — and it is measured at rated conditions, not at the low speeds the unit spends most of its life at, where it is quieter still.

Fifty-eight decibels is roughly a normal conversation at a few feet, and it is meaningfully quieter than most full-size ducted competitors, which sit in the low 60s at full load. Features and controls

The SL25XPV pairs with Lennox’s S40 and iComfort smart thermostats, which handle scheduling, remote access, humidity control, air quality monitoring and dealer-side diagnostics. Like Carrier’s and Trane’s flagships, the system needs a Lennox communicating control to modulate properly, so third-party thermostats are not a real option.

The Quantum Coil deserves a mention as a feature rather than a spec. All-aluminum construction removes the dissimilar-metal joints that cause formicary corrosion, which was the source of a great many premature coil leaks across the industry. It is one of the reasons Lennox equipment tends to hold up in coastal and high-humidity environments.

Zoning is supported through Lennox’s damper systems and works well with a compressor that throttles to a low minimum.

Warranty and reliability

Dave Lennox Signature Collection equipment carries a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor and covered components with registration. That is standard for a U.S. flagship, and it is the SL25XPV’s weakest competitive dimension: Trane covers its flagship compressor for 12 years, and Daikin covers parts for 12. Labor is not included.

Lennox’s reliability record is more mixed than Trane’s. The equipment itself is well engineered, but Lennox operates a comparatively closed parts distribution system, and independent contractors frequently report that Lennox-specific components are harder and slower to source than Carrier or Trane equivalents. If the dealer who installed your system leaves the business, finding another Lennox-authorized contractor can be harder than it should be.

That is not a reason to rule out the brand, but it is a reason to weight the specific dealer heavily. Ask how long they have carried Lennox and how they handle warranty parts.

Lennox is consistently among the most expensive residential brands, and the SL25XPV sits at the top of its own range. The equipment justifies a premium; whether it justifies this premium depends on how much you value the noise rating and the 11.2 HSPF2 on the 3-ton size. On incentives: the federal 25C credit, 30% up to $2,000, was terminated for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so a 2026 install does not qualify. State and utility programs — Mass Save, NYSERDA, TECH Clean California and HEAR-funded state rebates — remain, and the SL25XPV clears essentially every efficiency threshold they set, which can be worth several thousand dollars. Who should buy it

The SL25XPV is the right system if noise is a priority — a tight lot, a bedroom window above the unit, an HOA with sound limits — or if you are in a heating-dominated climate where a 3-ton unit fits and that 11.2 HSPF2 will pay you back every winter. It is also a strong choice in coastal air, where the Quantum Coil earns its premium.

It is not the right system if you are budget-constrained, if your local Lennox dealer is thin, or if you want the longest warranty in the category. In those cases the Elite tier or a competitor makes more sense.

Alternatives

Carrier Infinity 24 is the closest match on efficiency and control sophistication, with a broader dealer network and a comparable 10-year registered warranty.

Trane XV20i gives up efficiency and quiet operation but adds two years of compressor coverage and an easier parts supply chain.

The SL25XPV is one of the best-engineered ducted heat pumps sold in the U.S., and if quiet operation or heating efficiency is your deciding factor, it deserves the shortlist spot. Size it correctly rather than generously, insist on a Lennox communicating thermostat, and register the system to secure the 10-year term.

For most homeowners we would price the Elite tier first. It delivers inverter comfort and 17–18 SEER2 for several thousand dollars less, and unless the 58 dB(A) rating or the heating efficiency is solving a specific problem for you, that is where the value sits.
