Where Mitsubishi is stronger
Mitsubishi has the deepest ductless catalog in the U.S. market: wall units, floor consoles, ceiling cassettes, and slim ducted air handlers that can all hang off the same multi-zone outdoor unit. Its Diamond Contractor network has been installing ductless systems for decades, so experienced installers are easy to find in most metro areas. If your home has no ducts, or you want to zone an addition, sunroom or bonus room, Mitsubishi is the safer bet.
Where Daikin is stronger
Daikin FIT was engineered around one problem: replacing a conventional split system in a home with limited outdoor space. The side-discharge cabinet is far slimmer than a traditional cube and can sit close to a wall or under a deck. Daikin’s VRV Life takes a different approach, borrowing from commercial variable-refrigerant-flow (VRF) technology to run a ducted air handler and ductless heads from a single outdoor unit. For a home that needs central air on the main floor plus a couple of ductless zones upstairs, VRV Life is a genuinely different option that Mitsubishi answers only with separate systems.
Noise
Both brands are quiet by conventional standards, and noise should not be the deciding factor unless a unit will sit outside a bedroom window. Mitsubishi rates its quietest indoor wall units as low as about 19 dB(A) on low fan and its outdoor units as low as roughly 49 dB(A). Daikin’s wall units list similar low-fan figures, around 20 dB(A) on the quietest models, while the FIT outdoor unit runs in the mid-50s dB(A) at typical speeds according to manufacturer literature, which is normal for a ducted inverter condenser. Reliability and warranty
