The GSZV9 was Goodman’s first true variable-speed heat pump, a conventional top-discharge cabinet on R-410A. Goodman’s 2025-and-newer R-32 lineup shifts to side-discharge inverter cabinets such as the GZV9S, plus a lower-tier inverter model, alongside the two-stage GSZH5 and single-stage models that make up most of Goodman’s volume. Lennox organizes its heat pumps into the Dave Lennox Signature Collection (SL-prefix, variable capacity), Elite (EL-prefix, including variable-capacity models such as the EL18XPV) and Merit (ML-prefix, single- and two-stage). The SL25XPV is the flagship, using Lennox’s Quantum aluminum-alloy outdoor coil and Precise Comfort variable-capacity control. Goodman’s GSZV9 is rated at up to 22.5 SEER2 when matched with the right Goodman indoor coil or air handler, with a nominal rating around 19.2 SEER2 across most sizes and HSPF2 that ranges from about 8.2 on basic matches into the 10 range on the best pairings. The R-32 GZV9S side-discharge model is listed at up to 21 SEER2 and 10 HSPF2. Goodman’s two-stage GSZH5 lands in the mid-teens SEER2, roughly where Lennox’s Merit models sit.

Cold-weather performance

Neither brand is a cold-climate specialist, and both flagships are usually installed with electric strip heat or a gas furnace as backup in climate zone 5 and colder. Both use inverter compressors that ramp up as temperatures fall, and both publish low-ambient heating operation into the single digits, but neither markets a guaranteed 100%-capacity-at-5°F figure the way Mitsubishi, Fujitsu or Bosch do. Goodman’s GSZV9 is quiet for its price thanks to its DC fan motor and redesigned top panel, and the GZV9S side-discharge cabinet is quieter still, but Goodman does not publish the same low minimums and owner feedback describes its inverter units as “quiet enough” rather than remarkable. Reliability and warranty

Goodman’s reputation has improved substantially under Daikin ownership, and its single-stage and two-stage units are widely regarded as simple, durable equipment that any contractor can service. The GSZV9 inverter platform is newer, and early owner reports include some control board and communication issues that Goodman has addressed through updates; the R-32 side-discharge models are newer still, so their long-term record is unproven. Lennox’s Signature models have a good reliability record, though the SL25XPV’s variable-capacity electronics are complex and repairs outside warranty are expensive.

The bigger reliability difference is parts. Goodman parts are inexpensive and stocked by nearly every HVAC supply house, so a repair rarely waits on shipping.
