The Rheem ProTerra is the most widely sold heat pump water heater in the United States, and with a Uniform Energy Factor of up to about 4.07 it uses roughly a quarter of the electricity of a conventional electric tank. It comes in 40, 50, 65 and 80-gallon sizes, plus 120-volt plug-in versions that can replace a gas water heater without an electrical panel upgrade. This review is based on manufacturer specifications, ENERGY STAR listings, published performance data and owner feedback, not hands-on testing.

Overview

A heat pump water heater is a hybrid: a compressor and evaporator sit on top of a conventional insulated tank and move heat out of the surrounding air into the water, with electric resistance elements as backup. Because it moves heat instead of generating it, it delivers three to four units of heat per unit of electricity, where a resistance element delivers slightly less than one.

Rheem sells the ProTerra in two families. The standard 208–240V models are the efficiency leaders, available in 40, 50, 65 and 80-gallon capacities and reaching up to about 4.07 UEF. The 120V plug-in models run on an ordinary household circuit, so you can replace a gas water heater without running a new 30-amp 240V circuit to the panel; a dedicated-circuit version comes in 40 and 50 gallons at up to 3.0 UEF, and a shared-circuit HydroBoost version in 40 through 80 gallons at up to 3.46 UEF.

All ProTerra models are ENERGY STAR certified, include built-in Wi-Fi through Rheem’s EcoNet platform, and carry a 10-year limited tank and parts warranty. Higher trims add LeakGuard, leak detection with an automatic water shutoff valve.

Efficiency

UEF, or Uniform Energy Factor, is the current federal efficiency metric for water heaters and works roughly like a coefficient of performance: a UEF of 4.0 means about four units of heat delivered per unit of electricity consumed. A conventional electric resistance tank rates around 0.90 to 0.95.

Distributor listings show the 65-gallon ProTerra at roughly 4.05 UEF and the 80-gallon at roughly 4.07 UEF. Rheem states the technology can cut water heating energy use by up to about 75% versus a standard electric model, which on a household spending $600 a year suggests $350–$450 in annual savings. Your result depends on hot water use, the temperature of the space the tank sits in, and how often the resistance elements engage. The 120V models trade efficiency for installation flexibility: 3.0 and 3.46 UEF are both far better than resistance heating but short of the 240V units, so if you already have a 240V circuit at the tank, use it.

Heat pump water heaters need air to work. Rheem and most manufacturers specify a minimum space volume, commonly around 700 cubic feet, or ducting to bring in air. A tank crammed into a tight closet without ducting will run on resistance elements more than you expect and never hit its rated efficiency.

Hot water performance

The first-hour rating tells you how many gallons of hot water the unit delivers in an hour starting from a full, hot tank. The 65-gallon ProTerra is rated up to roughly 72 gallons, and larger tanks deliver proportionally more. The figure varies with ambient conditions and operating mode, so treat it as a planning number rather than a guarantee.

The sizing rule differs from conventional tanks. Because the compressor recovers more slowly than a 4,500-watt resistance element, most installers recommend going one size up from the tank you are replacing: a household on a 50-gallon electric tank is usually happier with a 65-gallon ProTerra. That extra stored volume is what keeps the unit in efficient heat pump mode instead of firing the resistance backup during a morning shower rush.

Rheem’s operating modes are the other half of this. Energy Saver runs the heat pump only and is the most efficient; High Demand adds resistance backup during heavy use; Electric mode uses resistance elements only, useful during a cold snap in an unheated garage but expensive; and vacation mode drops the setpoint while you are away. Most households should leave it in Energy Saver.

The ambient operating range is a genuine strength: Rheem lists 37°F to 145°F, which it describes as the widest in class and which meets Northern Climate Specification Tier 2. That matters if the tank lives in an unheated basement or garage in a cold region, where competitors drop into resistance mode more often.

Room cooling and dehumidification

Every heat pump water heater cools and dries the air around it, because that is where the heat comes from. A ProTerra in a basement will drop the space temperature by a few degrees and pull a meaningful amount of moisture out of the air, which many owners in humid climates count as a benefit that partly replaces a dehumidifier.

In the wrong location it is a drawback: a tank in a conditioned closet steals heat your furnace or heat pump then has to replace, quietly eroding the efficiency gain in heating season. Basements, utility rooms and garages in mild climates are ideal. The unit also produces condensate, a few gallons a day in humid conditions, which must reach a floor drain or condensate pump; skipping that is one of the most common installation mistakes.

Noise

Noise is the ProTerra’s most contested specification. Rheem previously marketed it with a “whisper quiet” claim and a figure around 49 dB, but has since removed both from its current spec sheets, and owner reports vary considerably from that older figure. We would not rely on 49 dB as a design assumption.

The character of the sound is not in dispute. A heat pump water heater runs a compressor and a fan, producing a continuous low hum plus airflow noise for hours at a stretch, unlike a silent conventional tank. In a basement or detached garage nobody notices; directly below a bedroom or in a closet adjoining a living room, some owners find it genuinely bothersome. If placement is unavoidably close to living space, plan mitigation into the installation: vibration isolation pads under the tank, flexible connectors instead of rigid pipe, and insulation in the joist bays above. Features and controls

EcoNet is Rheem’s connectivity platform and one of the better ones in the category. Built-in Wi-Fi connects to a phone app that shows hot water availability, changes modes and setpoints remotely, schedules vacation periods and sends fault and maintenance alerts. If you also own an EcoNet-enabled Rheem heat pump, both appear in the same app.

LeakGuard is the feature most worth paying for on higher trims. A sensor detects water at the base of the tank and an integrated valve shuts off the incoming supply automatically, with an alert to the app. On an 80-gallon tank in a finished basement, that is real insurance against a five-figure water damage claim.

The EcoPort connection is a CTA-2045 module port that lets a utility enroll the water heater in a demand-response program, typically pre-heating water off-peak and pausing during grid peaks in exchange for a bill credit or upfront incentive. Where these programs exist they are among the better remaining incentives now that the federal tax credit has ended.

Warranty and reliability

The ProTerra carries a 10-year limited warranty on the tank and parts, the top tier in residential water heating and better than the six-year coverage typical of conventional electric tanks. Labor is generally not included beyond a short initial period, so a control board failure in year seven means a service call charge even though the part is free.

Rheem is the largest water heater manufacturer in North America and parts availability is excellent, which is the practical advantage over smaller brands. Field reports on the platform are broadly positive on the tank and heat pump; the components that generate the most service discussion are the control board and fan assembly, both covered parts.

The leading cause of poor-performance complaints is not the equipment but restricted airflow. A unit in a small closet without ducting or louvered doors will short-cycle and run its resistance elements far more than rated, and the owner will conclude the product is defective when the installation is the problem.

Price and value

Equipment pricing typically runs $1,600–$2,700 depending on capacity and trim, with LeakGuard and larger tanks at the top of the range. Professionally installed, expect $2,500–$4,500 (2026, before incentives), more if a gas-to-electric conversion requires a new circuit, a condensate pump, or venting removal and capping. The 120V plug-in models change that math: avoiding a new 240V circuit, and in many homes a panel upgrade, saves $1,000–$3,000 and is often the difference between a project happening and not happening.

On payback, annual savings of $350–$450 against a price premium of roughly $1,200–$2,000 gives three to five years versus a conventional electric tank, which is strong for an upgrade carrying a 10-year warranty. Against natural gas the economics depend entirely on local rates; in cheap-gas regions the payback can be very long.

The federal 25C tax credit that returned 30% up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pump water heaters was terminated for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check state programs, Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates where your state has launched them, and utility rebates, which for heat pump water heaters are frequently $300–$1,000 and sometimes more when paired with EcoPort demand-response enrollment. Who should buy it

The ProTerra is the default recommendation for anyone replacing an electric resistance water heater who has a basement, utility room or garage with reasonable air volume. The savings are large, the payback is short, the warranty is the best in the category, and the connectivity is genuinely useful rather than decorative. It is also the strongest option for gas-to-electric conversions, thanks to the 120V plug-in versions that sidestep the electrical work that usually kills those projects.

Look elsewhere if your only available location is a tight closet adjoining a bedroom, if the tank would sit in a space that regularly drops below 37°F, or if you have very cheap natural gas and no plans to electrify. If you need very high simultaneous draw, such as a large soaking tub plus multiple showers, size up to the 80-gallon model.

Alternatives

The A. O. Smith Signature 900 series, sold through retail channels, and its professional equivalent the Voltex line are the closest competitors, with similar efficiency, similar sizes and their own 120V plug-in offerings. Connectivity is comparable and the dealer network is strong; the choice often comes down to local availability and price on the day.

The Bradford White AeroTherm series is the contractor’s alternative, sold exclusively through wholesale distribution rather than retail. It is well regarded for build quality and serviceability and is frequently what a plumbing contractor will recommend, though you cannot buy one at a big-box store and pricing is less transparent.

Our recommendation

Buy the Rheem ProTerra if you are replacing an electric water heater and have a basement, garage or utility room to put it in. Up to about 4.07 UEF, a wide 37°F to 145°F operating range, a 10-year tank and parts warranty, EcoNet connectivity and optional LeakGuard add up to the most complete package in residential water heating, and a three-to-five-year payback against resistance heating is hard to argue with.

Size one step up from the tank you are replacing, confirm the space meets Rheem’s air volume requirement or plan for ducting, and make sure the installer routes condensate properly. Do not assume the old 49 dB figure Rheem no longer publishes; if the tank will sit near living space, budget for isolation pads and flexible connectors. And if you are converting from gas, look hard at the 120V plug-in versions before paying an electrician for a new circuit.
