The Carrier Infinity 24 Heat Pump with Greenspeed Intelligence is Carrier’s flagship ducted variable-speed system, and it is one of the most efficient central heat pumps sold in the United States. Carrier rates it at up to 24.0 SEER, 15.0 EER and 13.0 HSPF under the older test procedure — which works out to roughly 22 SEER2 and 10.5 HSPF2 on the current one — and it modulates between about 25% and 100% capacity rather than switching on and off. It costs accordingly.

Overview
Carrier’s model numbering causes more confusion than any other brand’s, so it is worth clearing up before anything else. The Infinity 24 heat pump is model 25VNA4. Carrier air conditioner model numbers all begin with 24, so a “24VNA6” on a quote is an Infinity air conditioner, not a heat pump. And as Carrier moved to the R-454B refrigerant it markets as Puron Advance, the residential heat pump catalog shifted to 27-series numbers.

If you are buying in 2026, you are almost certainly being quoted a 27-series unit. The 25VNA4 name still circulates because dealers, review sites and rebate lists have not caught up. Efficiency
Greenspeed Intelligence is Carrier’s name for pairing a variable-speed compressor with the Infinity System Control so the two negotiate output in fine increments. In practice the unit spends most of its running hours somewhere between a quarter and half of full capacity, which is where an inverter compressor is most efficient.
The headline numbers — up to 24.0 SEER, 15.0 EER, 13.0 HSPF for the 25VNA4 — are among the highest ever published for a residential ducted heat pump. Under the SEER2 test procedure that becomes roughly 22 SEER2 and 10.5 HSPF2, and the current R-454B units are rated up to about 23 SEER2. Either way, these are top-of-market figures, and only a handful of systems from Lennox and Trane compete.
Ratings are always for a specific AHRI-matched outdoor and indoor combination. Pairing an Infinity outdoor unit with a cheaper non-communicating air handler can cost several SEER2 points and disqualify the system from some utility rebates. Ask for the AHRI reference number, not just the model number.
Whether the top of the scale is worth paying for is a separate question. Moving from a 15 SEER2 single-stage system to this one will cut cooling energy substantially; moving from an 18 SEER2 inverter system to this one will not, and the price difference is usually several thousand dollars. Heating performance
Variable-speed capacity control is a genuine cold-weather advantage. As outdoor temperature drops, the compressor ramps toward full speed instead of staying pinned at a fixed output, which means the system delivers more heat exactly when the house needs more heat and delays the point where auxiliary electric resistance strips engage.
Carrier’s Infinity heat pumps hold usable output well into the 20s°F and continue heating below that with declining capacity. Several Infinity sizes appear on NEEP’s cold-climate heat pump product list, and Carrier was among the manufacturers that took part in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology Challenge, the program that pushed a generation of prototypes toward full capacity at 5°F.
That said, this is not a Mitsubishi. If your design temperature is below about 0°F, a dedicated cold-climate ductless or hybrid system will carry more of the load without backup heat. Cooling performance
Cooling is the Infinity’s strongest suit. Long, low-speed runs hold indoor temperature within about half a degree and dehumidify continuously, which is why humid-climate owners consistently report being comfortable at higher thermostat settings than they used with a single-stage condenser.
The Infinity System Control adds a dedicated dehumidification mode that will slow the indoor blower to wring more moisture out of the air even when the space is already at temperature. In the Southeast that feature alone can justify the step up from a two-stage system.
Low-ambient cooling is available down to 0°F when enabled through the Infinity control — relevant only for homes with server rooms or large west-facing glass, but it is there.
Noise
Carrier publishes sound output as low as 51 dB(A) for the Infinity 24, which is quiet for a full-size ducted condenser — roughly the level of a refrigerator at a few feet. That figure is at low speed, which is where the unit actually spends most of its time; at full speed in a July heat wave it is louder, in the low 60s.
The design contributions are a laminated composite base pan that damps compressor vibration, a variable-speed outdoor fan, and a silencer system on the compressor housing. In real installations the dominant noise complaint is almost never the compressor — it is airflow through undersized return ducts inside the house. Features and controls
The Infinity System Control is the centerpiece and it is not optional — Greenspeed’s fine modulation depends on the communicating link between control, outdoor unit and indoor unit. It is a color touchscreen thermostat with Wi-Fi, remote access, up to eight-zone damper control, humidity management, ventilation control and equipment fault reporting your dealer can read remotely.
Zoning is the underrated capability here. Because the compressor can throttle down to about 25%, the system can serve one small zone without short-cycling, which is exactly where conventional zoned systems fail. A well-designed Infinity zoning setup gets close to the room-by-room control people usually associate with ductless.
The downside is lock-in. The Infinity control is proprietary, it does not work as a standard 24V thermostat for a third-party device, and you cannot substitute a Nest or Ecobee without giving up the modulation you paid for.

Reliability reputation is good.
